While working on my story outline yesterday, I imagined my main character working in the customer service call center of a cable tv/internet company. She’d quickly and efficiently solve callers problems and they’d hang up feeling she truly cared about them as human beings. Where these Utopian ideas of customer service come from I cannot say, today’s research provided an overwhelming number of accounts of call center employees who are the anti-thesis to my heroine.
After spending the afternoon researching call center complaints for cable companies I realize that I am truly blessed with how few problems we have with our providers here in the Garrett house. The accounts of poor service people receive from cable companies and the call center employees whose job it is to help them fills limitless volumes of cyber space. There are people out there who have spent their enumerable hours on hold creating blogs to vent their frustrations.
Feeling that there is no way anyone who has had trouble with their internet or cable would find my character believable, I now have to help her find a new job. In today’s economy that’s not an easy task for a woman over 45 even if she’s a fictional character.
